The path from the river to Lendrick Muir woods is not actually all that new - it's been there a number of years. Apologies for any confusion caused, I've amended the descriptions of the photos on the gallery page to remove the word "new"; "path put in by WALC" would describe it better. Here is a link to a map of the path location. Just zoom out to get your bearings.

I've also uploaded your photo of the path from near the church to the Institute, thanks for sending it.

New Paths

I see your new gallery (WALC Photos) of a new path through Lendrick Muir woods. I can't figure out where this is though! I was through there last weekend and managed to miss it entirely. Idiot-guide please :-)

A new path has also been laid from by the church, at the back of the newer graveyard, past the foot of Waulkmill Park towards the new houses by the Institute (I have a lovely dreary photo but can't attach it!?)

Thanks for keeping us 'posted' on all this stuff.

The guided wildlife walk around Crook of Devon is a great idea. 5am is a bit early for me but sounds like it would be worth the effort. I'm no expert myself so I would be along to learn rather than inform. Maybe others could suggest knowledgeable guides or volunteer themselves?

The cow toll is a nice idea but, as it would have to be an honesty box system, I'm not sure it is really enforceable. I just don't think cows are honest enough for that to work. Sheep on the other hand, now that could be worth looking into…

Thanks for confirming the location for the new bridge.

WALC Fundraising idea: as usual this is enlightened self-interest! How about a guided 'wildlife walk'? I attended a bird dawn chorus walk at Dunblane's Holmehill in May. This was a 5AM start which was quite harsh but the best time to see and hear things before human activity starts up. I don't think it has to be quite so early around here but preferably pre-dog-walkers as they pretty much scare everything away (the dogs, not the walkers!)

Is there anyone out there who would kindly offer their local knowledge and expertise to lead a group maybe along the river, gorge and back through Lendrick Muir woods, identifying sights, sounds, other 'edvidence' and/or gems of local knowledge? Would anyone else be interested to participate and share knowledge or learn? I can manage a few birds (basically anything that appears in the book as "common") but there is so much other stuff I want to know about. For, say, £5 on the day folk could sign up via this website?

How about a 'cow-toll' on the new bridge? The cows seem quite fond of crossing the river when it's low… Maybe not.

If I come up with anything else I'll contact Bronwen Wheatley.

I've checked the details with WALC and the bridge will be about 3m upstream of the path that leads to the river from Naemoor Road.

On the question of how to help WALC, more money is needed to help fund the work and if you have any ideas for fundraising or want to help out in other ways, please get in touch with Bronwen Wheatley on 01577 840212.

Hi Crookedt

I'm really looking forward to the new bridge too - I believe the paths will be improved as part of the work as well. Well done indeed to WALC! They really have put in a lot of hard work to make this happen.

Thanks for your post, the website is still new so it's great to get some activity on the forum already. I'm hoping more people will leave their thoughts and questions as the site gets more visitors (numbers of visitors have really started to pick up since we began publicising the site properly).

Apologies for the image quality of the map - I'll try to improve on this and will ask WALC whether they have any extra info/pictures. You have correctly identified the location of the crossing though (junction of the purple dotted lines labelled FSWY/16 & FSWY/109).

I'll also pass on your question of how we can help the cause and reply here.

Regards
Dadn

I am delighted by this news. Well done to the WALC folk for 7 years' work! I hope it works out

smoothly. I am unclear from the map where exactly the bridge will be though. I would guess at

the top middle, at the junction of the purple dotted lines labelled FSWY/16 & FSWY/109, but

please could you confirm? The map labels are hard to read (I took them from the PKC PDF). Is

there any more information available? Can we help with anything apart from funding the

puddings?!

This will complete the 6.5 mile circular walk round Crook of Devon, Drum and Rumbling Bridge. WALC has spent the last seven years negotiating with landowners and, with the generous help of the Community, fundraising to make the Fossoway School Millennium Walk a reality. We are almost there. Most of the money has been raised but we still need some more so if you have any fundraising ideas please contact Bronwen Wheatley on 01577 840212.

Click the map on the left for more info on the core path network.
